Lighting Tips

The economic and environmental impact of lighting in Georgia falls primarily in two areas:

  1. Economic: New lighting technologies reduce Total Cost of Ownership:
    1. Energy Efficiency – Lighting is the #2 consumer of energy consumption (HVAC is #1). From 30% up to 70% reduction in conventional lighting energy consumption can be achieved with new lighting technologies.
    2. Long Lamp Life – Increased lamp life lowers total cost of ownership. It also reduces the amount of lighting watts and heat in the ceiling which reduces the electrical consumption for HVAC air conditioning (remember that HVAC is #1 in energy consumption). With Georgia having a significant summer electrical load, energy conservation can again be achieved locally.
  2. Environmental:
    1. Protect our Precious Georgia Water Supplies – New lighting technologies reduce the levels of mercury in fluorescent and HID lamps found in conventional lighting. Reduction in the consumption of these hazardous substances consumed (and ultimately disposed of) in the manufacturing of lighting equipment reduces the toxicity in our precious water supplies in Georgia and the Southeast.
    2. Reduce Air Pollution and Greenhouse gas Emissions in Georgia – Reduction in energy consumption also means reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation, principally carbon dioxide, but also sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide, as well. Of these, greenhouse gas emissions are most significant.

Provided below are several pragmatic lighting tips for existing building property owners and their representatives to consider to achieve the above benefits:
